Open ears and eyes since 1980 - DJing since 1993 - Producing since 1997
I started DJing way back in 1993. It was an era soundtracked mainly by tape hiss and rap radio, provided by over-loud earphones and bad speakers. For me these were pre-internet days, where digging for rap records meant even more homework as well as getting dirty and spending more time than necessary in some pretty shady stores. Finding names of records heard on the radio, which were either mumbled or omitted completely, was a long and drawn out process of scouring magazines, guessing at the names and groups and spending a good while hunched over listening decks. But sometimes there was some hard work too.
Well, in 1995 I gave myself the name Buddy Peace (I’ll spare you the previous ones, jeez), and from here on things got more serious. Over the years following I was properly scratching and mixing, making efforts to learn by ear and get some kind of co-ordination going. The first Technics deck came through in 1995 too via my brother, with the next coming through a few years later.
My first beats were made on my little handheld Yamaha sampler, just loops thrown together by ear with a marginal success rate but the seed was planted in there for sure. The need to make my own music was a very natural follow on from DJing, as I know it works for a lot of people, and it all worked so harmoniously. The common factors and the links were so clear, and just making beats and scratching or mixing over them was just perfect. Just losing hours daily to it, it was unbeatable.
I got the first MPC in 2000, when I started to get a bit deeper into it. After hours spent hitting pads and buttons blindly, I managed to get sounds out of it and into it, and began making some little programs here and there. I’d been making mixtapes all the while (They’re still floating around somewhere, I’m sure of it… I can feel them…), and minidiscs too – lots of them… Fiddly little bastards for real but I loved them. Not as much as cassettes but still. Anyway, from here on things got way busier and full on, with more practice and more live shows. Crazy fun.
Over the years that follow from then, I’ve been lucky and fortunate enough to play alongside and make music with Buck 65 (DJing for), Sage Francis, B. Dolan (DJing for), Ceschi, 2econd Class Citizen, Dangermouse, The Notwist, Boom Bip, The Fog, Gang Starr, Roots Manuva, Subtle, Themselves, Hood, Bracken, Prince Po (I DJ’d for him too), Jimmy Edgar, Team Shadetek, Ed DMX, Waxfactor, Clark, Beans, Qbert (got a plane with him and Yoga Frog!), Atmosphere, Fujiya & Miyagi, Warp Records, Lex Records, 2600 Records, Bully Records, Equinox Records, Strange Famous Records (which I am currently signed to) and loads more, and it’s been an absolute trip… There will be more to come, and a bunch more music as well for sure. I’ll be making noise about that as and when for real! There are some hefty projects on the go.
Highlights:
2004:
DJing three times on the main stage between Guru, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Roots Manuva at Barcelona’s Sonar festival (at ‘Sonar By Night’)

2007 and beyond…:
Performing with Get Cape Wear Cape Fly at the Glastonbury festival, in a similar fashion to the Electric Proms show (’07)
Working with Buck 65, from making the megamix for his ‘Situation’ album and playing alongside and producing with him on various releases (’07-present)
Hooking up with Strange Famous Records, the label founded by Sage Francis. I have released music with them, performed on releases and made radio edits for various releases for them, and hopefully will continue to work with them for a long time to come! (’07-present)
The release of my debut solo album ‘Late Model Sedan’, in 2009. It had been in production since 2004 in one way or another, and I finally completed it as an album which was then released digitally on Strange Famous Records (and via all digital outlets) (’09)
The ‘Strange Citizens’ tour, 2010. This was with 2econd Class Citizen, Ceschi and DJ Scientist in Europe. It couldn’t have been better. Lovely people and some amazing music for the whole tour.
